The Ideal City

I edited The Ideal City, a collaboration with IKEA's Copenhagen-based research and design lab, SPACE10, while working at gestalten. It combines essays, best practices and interviews with global thought leaders, including Jan Gehl, Bjarke Ingels, Yasmeen Lari and more. From unconventional street furniture to new approaches to policing in Indigenous communities, this book explores the many elements that could make up an ideal city.

This book came about from a growing appetite to create a publication that addresses the many challenges that our cities are facing. It’s almost impossible to read the news without feeling some sense of existential dread. We wanted a book that explores the flip-side, meeting some of the change-makers who are addressing these challenges head-on.

The Ideal City was featured in Wallpaper*, Architectural Digest, among others. More than 800 viewers logged on to its virtual launch, which featured a conversation between Gehl founder Helle Søholt and Bjarke Ingels.

"Every week, 1.5 million people move into urban areas worldwide in search of opportunities and a better life. What kind of home do we want to create for humanity? This question has never been more urgent."
